THE BASICS

What is hockey stick height?

Stick height describes the measured size of a stick, but the number only makes sense with a measurement method. Overall height and shaft-only length use different endpoints and should not be treated as interchangeable.

For the overall-height method shown below, stand the stick upright with the back of the shaft against a wall and measure from the floor to the top. When sending your specification, include the method, units and whether the stick has been cut or extended.

ON THE ICE

What does stick length affect?

Length changes your reach, hand position and the space in which you handle the puck. A shorter setup brings play closer to the body; a longer setup provides more reach. Both need to work with your skating stance and how the blade contacts the ice.

Fit your length alongside flex and lie. Cutting a shaft changes its effective stiffness, so a flex label by itself does not describe the feel of a shortened stick. Use your current setup as a reference and compare the proposed length in your usual stance.

HEIGHT GUIDE.

Use a consistent measurement before comparing lengths. Fit also depends on stance and personal playing preference.

How to measure your hockey stick height

For an overall-height measurement, stand the stick upright with the back of the shaft against a wall and measure from the floor to the shaft top. When discussing your GWIND build, specify whether you mean overall height or shaft-only length.

Finding your height

Without skates, chin-to-nose height is a useful fitting starting point. Try your usual skating stance before choosing a length.

  • Compare the setup in your usual stance
  • Check reach, puck control and comfort
  • State the measurement method with your requested length

Adjust for playing style and preference. Suitable length supports puck handling, shooting accuracy, balance, passing and comfort.

Height questions

How tall should my hockey stick be?

Chin-to-nose height without skates is a fitting starting point, rather than a final rule. Check your reach, hand position and blade contact in a skating stance, and compare against a stick you already use comfortably.

Is overall height the same as shaft length?

No. Overall height includes the position of the blade in the chosen measuring setup; shaft length measures the shaft itself. Include a photo of the measurement and its endpoints when comparing two specifications.

Will cutting a stick change how it feels?

Yes. A shorter shaft generally feels stiffer when loading a shot. The size of the change depends on the stick and the amount removed. Confirm your intended finished length and flex together before cutting.

Which GWIND length should I put in my request?

Choose a starting value from the Senior, Intermediate or Junior options below, then state the measurement method. Include your current stick length and what you would like to change so GWIND can confirm the requested build.
